Description
Bake a big yam (Sugar) is on the album BABY (Being a Black youth), by One Be Lo. Full album available here: https://onebelo.bandcamp.com/album/baby-being-a-black-youth . . BACK STORY When I was a kid, some of the older people would say things like, "come over here and give ya auntie some sugar." Then She would hug you like she havent seen you since the last family reunion and smack a BIG kiss on you. The word "kiss" is in the sample, so it made me think of that type of "sugar" that comes from Grandparents. So based on that, I wrote a song dedicated to my Grandmothers. I grew up with 3 Grandmothers in Pontiac Michigan. Mrs Goldie, Mrs Ollie and Mrs Delphina. my Grandmothers were G-O-D. Mrs Goldie transitioned back in 1992, but as of release of this song, Mrs Delphina is a robust 90 year old elder and Mrs Ollie is blessed to be 84. I would have loved to include my Grandmothers in the video, but during this Covid 19 pandemic I wanted to be safe around my grandmothers, so I chose to shoot the video sitting on her front porch instead. Video shot by fellow native Elite Media, is filmed at the infamous Shirley Park, in my hometown Pontiac, Mi. The song is about my grandmothers, but also about Mothers and Grandmothers in general. So appearing in the video are my relatives, which include my own Mother, who is a grandmother as well as my Sister. This song is dedicated to all Grandmothers. And even though my Grandma Ollie is not in the actual video, Her Children, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, and Great Great Grandchildren are in this short video so that means that She's definitely in the video as well. Generations of her legacy. Also, I made a trip to Oak Hill Cemetery where my Grandma Goldie is buried along with my Grandfather, Uncle George and Cousin Oggie. 2020 was a year of many tests, and now that 2021 is here, I wanted to celebrate the New, while not forgetting the Old or where I come from. The song was also a tribute to my Brother in law who appears in the video in memory of His Mother (DeCarla Ringstaff) who recently passed away. She is a Grandmother too. . . credits from Baby (Being a black youth), released November 7, 2020 BEAT PRODUCTION: Eric G (Soul Council) ADDITIONAL INSTRUMENTATION: Jonas Siegel ADDITIONAL SAMPLES: OneManArmy LYRICS: One Be Lo ADDITIONAL ADLIBS: Laura ‘Piece’ Kelly CHORUS PERFORMED BY: Liza Garza SCRATCHES: DJ Abilities RECORDED/MIXED by: Aaron Angus MASTERING by: D Sane
